Tavish J I’ve been meditating since the fourth grade.
Meet Tavish.
My name is Tavish. All I do is work. I was working at a car dealership and I was building some type of foundation to my success. Then the pandemic happened. Then I lost my job as a car salesman. Me being the only Black person that worked there, I was the only one that was let go while they hired somebody else. I was impacted. I ended up getting unemployment checks. So that was a sign of release. If it wasn’t for the unemployment, it would have been crazy.
How I meditate
I’ve been meditating since the fourth grade. My fourth grade teacher taught us as a class how to meditate every morning. I’m 34 today, so I’ve been doing this ever since fourth grade. I listen to videos on YouTube about Zen Buddhism. Meditate and get your thoughts together. Understand that there’s 24 hours in a day. Take one step at a time, one minute at a time, you’ll be okay.
People who’re going through these things are not the only ones.
So you may be going through something, but somebody else is going through it with you. See how they’re dealing with it. And maybe you can use their examples for your own experience. My life is good, but it ain’t perfect. I deal with things on a daily basis. Because I have so much mental toughness, I’m able to deal with it. My mind is stronger than my body — even though I’m a strong person, physically. I just do the best I can.
Waking up in the morning, getting all your thoughts together, expecting the unexpected, and keeping a clear mind.
Focus on the journey rather than the goal.
I’m a huge Phil Jackson fan, so you’ll probably hear his name a lot coming out of my mouth. He’s considered the Zen master. That’s what he taught Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, all the Hall of Fame NBA players that he’s coached. Focus on the journey rather than the goal. I think about the day ahead of me. What I’m going to do, the people I’m going to interact with. I don’t think about the week or the month, just the day. I have goals that I want to reach in life, whether financial or academic. Right now I’m focusing on today. The future will come.
